To us, Scandinavian Soul is more than the exciting discovery of this wonderful music, but also an opportunity of introducing an international audience to soulful Nordic culture and lifestyle.
It was therefore important for us that a Scandinavian designer should create the award for our annual event. Having already met Ceramic designer Frida Anthin Broberg at 'Soul to Remember' (an event Frida and her husband Sebastian organise) we were delighted when she agreed to design the awards for our first-ever celebration of Scandinavian Soul artists and the music.
From 5 - 7 September 2013 Scandinaviansoul.com and Horsens Ny Teater, a modern theatre in Horsen, near Billund in Denmark, present the first "Scandinavian Soul" festival, which brings together more than 120 young musicians from all over Scandinavia.
Here at Scandinavian Soul we aren't just focused on the superb artists but we're also interested in Scandinavian places that play soul music or just cool places that have a soulful vibe. We've found one such place in Espoo, Finland.
With a humble yet confident persona, soul newcomer Elias Sahlin strolls into the room. There, he finds Andy Collins setting up his camera for an impromptu photo shoot of someone who is, in my opinion, a star in the making.
"Stealing" someone elses audience is not a bad thing, not at all.. After listening to the southern Swedish soul/rap/spoken word poetry crew S.T.I.C.S and interviewing and grooving to the rhythms of Trees multi-flowing beats.... I would say I'm a believer.
Speaking on S.T.I.C.S one might not be surprised of their "crossover" collaborations knowing that they are based in Helsinborg, fast becoming an inter & multi-cultural music mecca of Sweden.
It’s not often you see a music producer stepping from the shadow of his studio into the limelight and pouring his heart out with the passion you’d normally expect from a seasoned frontman; flailing around the stage as he sings and raps his way through a performance that reeks of SOUL and FULL-ON commitment. But 'Soulful' does just that.
