A Shining Christel

Written by

From Barbara Moleko to Quadron, the Danes seem to be producing a varied range of artists who all express their soul in their own Scandinavian way. In 2013, I wrote down the names of two of these artists, underlined them, and added the words “keep an eye on”- these artists were Scarlet Pleasure and Rebekah Christel.

There's a rawness, a feeling of untamed energy and sheer attitude that makes Rebekah Christel, much like Scarlet Pleasure, really appealing.

In a recent video posted online (which I'm sadly unable to share) she unleashes a stunning acoustic performance. No auto-tune needed - just natural, raw talent.

'Holy shit!' was the best comment I read underneath the video, and I couldn't have said it better myself!

Rebekah's debut EP opens with the title track ‘Never Ending’, which has a dreamy retro sound that reminds me of the British band Portishead. The production balances the bass and eerie echoes nicely. This track alone should convince you to continue listening.

Track #2, ‘Run for It’, is another bass-driven soulful / pop track that begs to be turned up! Rebekah’s vocals float delightfully throughout this song.

I was deceived by the slow, mellow opening to track #3 ‘For the Night’. It quickly turns into a wonderful electro drum and bass tune with a late 90's ambience that feels fresh with her vocals. Fully unexpected and enjoyable!

‘I Know’, the final track on the EP, could sit happily at the opening of a Bond film - slow-motion silhouettes, dark rooms, and guns. Hey, I'm just saying where this track takes me! There’s also ‘I Know (Beastie Respond Remix)’ for another fun twist.

Besides being Danish and 20 years old, I currently don't know much else about her, but I know enough for now. I really like what I hear and that's most important!

Rebekah Christel is the final jewel to what has been an exciting year for Scandinavian soul music.

  • Marie Dahlstrom - Nine EP

Cards on the table, I was a late-comer to the whole soul-blues-jazz axis of music.

It’s not as if I was actively avoiding it, its more that there is only so much time in the day and probably something to do with comfort zones too, if I’m honest. And whilst I enjoy doing my homework to fill in the musical gaps via revolutionary protest funk, slick west-coast jazz-rockers and incendiary and intricate electric blues slingers, it is in the quieter and more considered moments that I often find the greatest pleasures. It is why Marie Dahlstrom’s new e.p. has been a constant soundtrack for a while now.
