SoLi (SWE) – You Thought EP

Written by

We first heard the Swedish singer SoLi (such a great name!) on her debut track 'Suffocate my Love' — a strong, soulful introduction.

SoLi now follows this with her debut EP, 'You Thought', initially released on SoundCloud.

The success of her debut single immediately rose expectations, however the opening track 'Walking' doesn’t strike me the way “Suffocate my Love” did. The chorus vocals become lost in the high instrumentation level, and left me just feeling confused.

Track #2, 'Pleased', opens much better with a showcasing of delightful horns. The complete production on this track is tight and really enjoyable. SoLi’s rap tops off this track, which is easily the EP’s best!

The tempo slows with the ballad 'Just A Friend'. The pronounced electric guitar gives this track a pop/rock ballad feel, and although it doesn’t fit my ‘soul’ criteria, it’s lyrically and vocally good.

'Tell the World to Stop'
is track #4, and it’s another slow tempo track but with a strong and positive environmental and global message. Of all the tracks, I hope this one receives a video.

The EP finishes with the energetic title track 'You Thought'. SoLi feels like a determined, confident singer, exuding a scorned woman in a defiant mood telling her man to leave. Good stuff!

SoLi clearly has a potent, strong voice and smouldering attitude as she balances her music between soul, rock, and pop influences. It’s too early to tell from this EP quite where SoLi will land.

The world seems to be on fire with hate, division and power struggles. People are being killed because of their colour of skin and hated because of their religion. It’s time like this that the heart and strength of music can still bind us as human beings, in particular, soul music.

It was therefore a delight to hear a positive message from a new artist and his track called ‘Hoppas’ (Hope).
