Introducing Arvid Nero

Written by

Lovers of the award-winning Swedish band The Magnolia will instantly recognise the vocals of Arvid Nero as he launches his debut three-track solo EP - Introducing Arvid Nero.

We don't think we're the only ones who shed a tear when news broke that members of The Magnolia were heading in new directions. Keeping bands together is always difficult, even more so in today's world, so we're just grateful for the extraordinary music they created.

Now solo, Gothenburg based singer/writer Arvid Nero picks up his guitar and presents his personal expression.

The cover artwork may be Black & White, but the overall hue of the EP is blue. I'm sure Arvid would also say he's more blues than soul too, though, for us, there's plenty of soul in his voice.

Arvid's voice is haunting, tormented and emotionally filled which builds a connection you can't tear away from. Like Bob Dylan and BB King, Arvid conveys stories that are engaging in their compassionate presentation. It's Nordic dark but uplifting enough to disperse any menacing clouds.

Track #1 Underground is a real stand out and sets a marker for those who are new to his music. It encompasses haunting melodies, cool guitar chords and Arvid's captivating, emotive vocal style.

Track #2 Bored with Clay is catchy and the production layers this track with delicate touches. It's the type of song commercial radio would have played several years back had the artist's name been, for example, Bowie.

Rounding off the EP is Track #3 - the cinematic Primitivo Bar, lyrically woven with a story of a woman in black, men in bars and angels.

To be true blues and soul, it has to come from the heart and listening to this EP that's undoubtedly what you hear.

A super fine introduction, that's worth repeated late night plays.

EP Release Date: May 19, 2017

Cards on the table, I was a late-comer to the whole soul-blues-jazz axis of music.

It’s not as if I was actively avoiding it, its more that there is only so much time in the day and probably something to do with comfort zones too, if I’m honest. And whilst I enjoy doing my homework to fill in the musical gaps via revolutionary protest funk, slick west-coast jazz-rockers and incendiary and intricate electric blues slingers, it is in the quieter and more considered moments that I often find the greatest pleasures. It is why Marie Dahlstrom’s new e.p. has been a constant soundtrack for a while now.
