When an artist finds their heart in soul music, it comes through. Other genres may try to enhance these emotions with heavy technical adjustments (autotune), however, true soul sonics requires feelings extracted from within.
Demonstrating a heartfelt love for soul music Ellah Grace delivers her debut album – Give Me Just A Minute. Across nine original tracks, the Swedish artist reflects lived experiences such as learning from mistakes – Let it Rain to seeking heavenly hope – Miracle.
Living up to her name Ellah Grace has a graceful vocal style – warm and balanced with a delicate sweetness. The ’60s’ style of Give Me Just A Minute creates an assertive welcome to this collection with warm keys and wailing guitar notes. When Ellah turns the tempo up, such as the groovesome – A Beat, it pulsates with northern soul floor-filling vibes and exits with a scintillating guitar outro.
One of the album’s strongest tracks, Monsters, allows Ellah to illustrate her vocals as they soar above this stripped-back production. Exquisite songwriting moves this into a timeless sphere. And the fusion of rock, pop, soul on Guiding Light would illuminate any drive home.
The whole album rides the soul waves like a boat on the ocean, moving in the right direction without commanding the sea. Perhaps a stronger soundscape, Northern soul, cross-over or retro soul, might have grounded this albums’ identity; however, Ellahs’ album is a declaration of love for the music and honours the liberation of her feelings – that is, after all, the sound of soul music.
