Earlier this spring, we wrote about Mercedesss‘ single ‘Back to Business‘ and praised the production and the artist’s performance. Now she is releasing another single from her new album ‘Casa Fantasia‘, called ‘Summer’s Already Gone‘, and once again, she serves us a dark, intriguing and captivating track.
Summer’s Already Gone offers you a range of emotions. We hear nostalgia, melancholia and fragility. We hear the sentiment of missing something or someone, bright memories, and a string of sadness. As with her previous release, where we praised its well-balanced and detailed production, this new single follows along the same line, and it gives us an excellent indication of her upcoming album’s soundscape.
Instrumentally, the song has many unexpected elements. Listening to the melody and Mercedesss’ singing style, we would have expected a fuller, electronic production. Instead, the sound is unexpectedly acoustic, with stripped-down guitars, interesting breakbeats and beautiful strings. Delightfully, this makes the song more captivating, not less, and throughout the entire length, we kept listening for more interesting details and brilliantly unexpected choices.
According to Mercedess, her song is about “falling in love with the whole amazing adventure of Summer that always comes to a brutal end.” However, it seems like the lyrics have even more depth than being about summer, and we wonder if summer might be a metaphor for something else. Maybe it is a metaphor for a star-crossed lover who cannot stay forever, no matter how wonderful? Perhaps it is a metaphor for shattered hopes and dreams, the euphoria of having them, and the feeling of emptiness when you start to doubt them? Or maybe, it is a metaphor for the ride of a lifetime and the fear of life coming to an end?
We don’t know and it doesn’t matter. What matters is that Mercedess truly delivers a song that everyone can understand from their perspective, their experiences and their life stories.
