Finnish artist Julye Blom makes her Scandinavian Soul debut with Mama, a one-take soul-funk-rock release that blends blues, grit, and emotion while introducing a compelling new voice.
Produced by Julie Blom and Kalle Outila, it was recorded live in the studio in just one take. This soul-funk-rock banger races along at 164 BPM. Originally written as a melancholic blues tune, it transformed in the studio into an unfiltered cry for help — a song for anyone running on empty. The raspy edge of Julye’s voice may remind listeners of Swedish artist Jasmine Kara or Danish artist Sahra Da Silva.
“I had been dancing on a knife’s edge for too long. One morning everything fell apart – I couldn’t run or hide anymore. ‘Mama’ was born in that exact moment, as a prayer of a lost soul.” – Julye Blom
At over four minutes long, Mama gives itself room to breathe, build and let loose. It’s the kind of track that sweeps away any cobwebs on the knees and hips!
In a world shaped by burnout and disconnection, Julye describes the song as “venting on a groove”. It captures that moment when you’ve hit rock bottom but somehow find the strength to stand up again.

While Mama marks Julye Blom’s latest release, it also serves as an excellent introduction to her discography so far. We spent time with her 2024 debut album, Painting It Blue, and the biggest disappointment was not discovering it sooner. From the gentle blues influences and heartfelt songwriting to immersive moments such as Searching For The Sun and the passionate Freedom, the album showcases an artist committed to capturing genuine emotion. The single Movin’ On is a new favourite!
Julye Blom feels like an old-school artist in the best sense. You can easily imagine her standing centre stage in a studio, surrounded by musicians, capturing the energy and soul of a performance as it unfolds. Seeing her live is already an easy decision.
