Independent Swedish artist Jána opens her new album Orbit with Ignorance Pt II, an atmospheric piece that instantly signals her understanding of space and sound. Its a captivating and gives a sense of an auditory demonstration. It sets the tone perfectly for what follows.
I must add that Tidal Music opened this album up like a treasure chest. As a recent convert to the platform from Spotify, Tidal’s high-fidelity sound enhances the album’s soulful and pop elements, revealing an exciting amount of rich layers and intricate details.
And what follows is Distant, a track that shines. The bass is deep, her vocals warm and tender, and the storytelling feels effortlessly real. It carries that smooth neo-soul and R&B feel, but with an accessible Scandinavian charm that creates its region’s uniqueness beautifully.
Then comes More to Life, which feels like stepping into another world, or, more precisely, Swedish radio pop. It’s so polished that when I first heard it, I genuinely thought a streaming advert had cut in. It’s pure radio gold, and though it might delight pop listeners, it breaks the soulful flow established earlier.
Thankfully, When Time Flies pulls us right back. This song is pure heart, delicate, emotional, and meticulously arranged. It’s the kind of track that makes you pause whatever you’re doing just to listen. The harmonies are exquisite, the blues chords are finely tuned, and it captures Jána’s sensitivity as a songwriter and performer.
The guitar-led single NMMTY leans back into a playful pop vibe, though not as jarringly as before. Layered with strings and a tight drum kick Rebel/Rebel is an audio sensation to embrace.
Then Orbit of You arrives, one of the album’s most moving moments!
There’s a Prince-esque undertone in its slow-burning groove, yet Jána makes it her own with her breathy phrasing and that unmistakable soulful touch. Her vocal storytelling glows like an ember, full of quiet intensity. Beautiful and timeless.
The journey continues with Today, a gorgeously arranged piece that brings Swedish band Little Dragon to mind. It’s soulful, carefully layered, and transports you for just under five minutes — a sign of her willingness to give the song the space to breathe. The closing track, Fjäril, rounds things off gracefully, growing in length and emotion. It’s interesting to note that the album songs expand in length as you travel through.
Across Orbit, Jána’s attention to detail stands out. Whether it’s the shift in production textures or her lyrical nuance, you can sense her deliberate choices.
My main dilemma… Orbit feels like two artists in one — the soulful Jana, whose emotional delicacy could melt concrete, and the pop Jana, whose polish could power a radio playlist. Both sides are good, but they invite different listeners. Personally, I’m drawn to her soulful side. That’s where she’s most distinct, most human, and most unforgettable.
For me, Distant, When Time Flies, Fjäril, Orbit of You, and Today are the heartbeat of this record. Together, they reveal an artist whose compelling approach to arrangements and emotional expression makes her one of Sweden’s most enthralling artists.
