I was genuinely happy to see 2025 end. I even shouted “Get lost 2025!” with a raised champagne glass as the clock struck midnight. It has been the most challenging year I have ever experienced.
The arrival of Jaleesa’s debut album Sodalite on vinyl felt like quiet confirmation that I had begun to turn a corner. I already knew the album well from repeated listens on Tidal, but hearing it as an LP brought the closeness and physical presence that I miss from digital formats.
Across 12 tracks Jaleesa draws from her own experiences as an Afro-Danish woman – her hair, her love and her black identity. Soul is the foundation of her distinguished, compelling and rich vocals. It’s seasoned at the roots of soul music, a messenger with a story to tell from her heart. The soulful arrangements, embodied by Jaleesa’s pre-releases, present a seamless balance between her productions and lyrics, which engage, provoke, or groove.

Strings open the stunning track ‘Woman‘, a track celebrating womanhood from an intersectional perspective, layered with strength and reflection. While ‘Black Jade‘ shifts the tone completely. It hits hard, musically and emotionally. Written in response to the repeated killing of Black people by police, it carries anger, grief, and clarity.
‘In Your Eyes’ melts the stress like butter in a hot pan. And to unwind further I suggest ‘Sonora Sunrise‘ where a gentle harmonies carry the song forward, with the beautifully repeated line “good morning sunrise” landing softly and staying with you.
‘Rose Quartz‘ unfolds gently, offering a reminder not to give up on love. Even as an interlude, it feels complete, guided by warmth and texture.
Then there is ‘Crystal Tears‘. This track can change the atmosphere of a room. Built on a 70s rare groove sensibility, it sounds luxurious and deeply soulful. It is one of my favourites on the album. That said, there are no weak moments here. No fillers. Every track earns its place.
Comparisons to artists like Jill Scott are understandable, but Jaleesa stands firmly in her own time. She is the voice of today. And just as importantly, this is Danish soul with international weight.
Looking at the album cover now, I’m reminded why music matters most in difficult periods. It steadies you. And if there’s one thing I want to remind myself of 2025, then Sodalite is it. This album deserves attention. Let’s hope the Danish Grammys recognise it too.
★★★★★ five solid soul stars.
