Artist names cannot be overstated, especially in shaping audience perception and interest in their music. A distinctive and catchy name like Diza Guava not only grabs attention but also sparks curiosity. I love her name, with its satisfying phonetics. It embeds itself upon first hearing, like her music.
An artist we’ve highlighted for years, Diza Guava’s new album ‘Autokritik‘ showcases her unique blend of soul, hip hop, and electronic influences. From soulful Swedish melodies to infectious beats and memorable hooks, each track offers a glimpse into her artistry.
Soothing track 1, Intro, plays like a prologue to an intriguing story, easing the listener in before the first of my four favourites, Tempo, begins.
Start here and start loudly.
Tempo exudes confidence without being cocky, setting the tone for the rest of the album.
Diza’s style, characterised by her electro-fused Red Light District sound, stands out among her peers. Her voice blends seamlessly blends with the instrumentation, creating a captivating effect albeit sometimes sacrificing clarity. Yet, this ambiguity allows interpretation, enriching the auditory experience.
Fakta, with its hints of Middle Eastern influence, emanates a spiritual ambiance, showcasing Diza’s vocal prowess and impeccable production, highlighted by her superb cello notes.
Turndown showcases Diza’s effortless energy, while Ktrl offers a calming contrast, revealing more of her vulnerability as we heard in the track Intro.
Hysteria is a standout track – period. And trust me, playing Diza loudly reveals a whole different level of pleasure. The bass and drums create a powerful rhythm and the chorus is impossible to not sing along to, even if you don’t know what she’s saying! Hips and butts will move regardless.
Lucky Luke also features a memorable chorus, though some may find the vocal effects excessive. The beautiful cello that carries the track out is magical. Tied together with the intro, like an epic and grand ending to the dynamic story that is Autokritik.
While the cover art may not fully capture the warmth and depth of Diza’s music, her individuality shines through, setting her apart in Sweden’s music scene. Yet, despite all her talent, Diza Guava remains undiscovered in Sweden, a fact that truly frustrates this reviewer. Her music speaks volumes, deserving of wider recognition. The album boasts four, yes four anthems – Tempo, Fakta, Turndown and Hysteria – each leaving a distinct impression.
With its undeniable quality and Diza’s captivating voice, ‘Autokritik‘ deserves to be heard and shared. Until then, this reviewer vows to continue championing Diza’s talent to keen eared listeners.
