Some EPs grab your attention immediately. Others slowly lift you off the ground. Spending around eighteen minutes with Baked Alaska feels like climbing into a hot air balloon, watching the everyday world quietly disappear beneath your feet.
American-Danish duo Baked Alaska: A Peter & Guianna Listening Experience found inspiration in baking to shape both their music and storytelling. Each track represents a different stage of the recipe: sponge cake, meringue, ice cream and the heat that transforms simple ingredients into something lasting and sweet.
With that mouth-watering prospect, I pressed play on Cake, a single that serves up laid-back jazz and neo-soul. The drums are skinny-jeans tight, while the electric guitar is played so delicately that it seems to radiate sunshine with every chord. Guianna’s smooth, effortless vocals complete the recipe, adding just the right amount of warmth without overpowering the groove. Here we enter an audio realm where echoes of Tracy Chapman, Sade and Adrianne Evans gently drift from the speakers.
That gentle ascent continues throughout the EP. To Forever slowly widens the horizon, while Meringue adds another layer of lightness before Ice Cream arrives with the comforting satisfaction of finally reaching your destination. By the end, everyday life feels just a little further away.
Just as Ice Cream completes the Baked Alaska dessert, this track ties together the EP’s narrative by celebrating the sweetness of life’s moments and the joy of savouring them fully. The song’s rich layers and smooth melodies encapsulate the culmination of the sonic journey, leaving listeners with a lingering sense of satisfaction.
I’d also encourage listeners to explore Baked Alaska’s live performances (see below). Their songs take on an even warmer character, creating the feeling of being invited to an intimate gathering rather than simply watching a concert. You almost expect someone to pass you a drink and pull up another chair.
The ingredients for Baked Alaska
Baked Alaska is built around more than musical chemistry. Peter, from Denmark, and Guianna, from the United States, have spent the past decade building a life together as partners both on and off the stage. After years of performing across America, the couple have recently settled in Sweden, where this new chapter is giving fresh momentum to their creative journey.
The Review
Baked Alaska: A Peter & Guianna Listening Experience
Baked Alaska has left me pleasantly full, but somehow I still wouldn't mind another slice. Or two... or three as soon as I land.
