Track one, the entrance to our musical transport is Golden Hour. Like a gentle walk beneath a tree-lined path, a soothing vocal soon leads into a soundscape that feels as expansive as the birth of a new universe. Planets drifting through the unknown.
It’s otherworldly and absolutely gorgeous.
Welcome to Kai Kuu.
Finnish duo Anna Soppela and Paavo Palosaari embrace analogue warmth and live performance, inviting listeners to slow down and be present. Dreamy vocals, psychedelic soul-jazz, expressive bass lines and spacious production create music that speaks directly to the heart. Adding another artistic layer, Soppela’s handmade paintings adorn the band’s vinyl releases, bringing music and visual art together beautifully.

Although we’ve only recently discovered Kai Kuu, the duo has been releasing music since 2023. We arrive with their latest album, Songs From The Sun, a self-produced project exploring the spiritual and physical nature of light. Each of the album’s 14 tracks is paired with an original painting, culminating in an exhibition this September at Neliö Gallery, one of Northern Finland’s oldest private galleries. Featured throughout the album are accomplished vocalist Antti A (Rabbit Hole, A Jealous Morning, Summer Night) and virtuoso flautist and saxophonist Jonna Konttinen (Songlines, Not The Same). It’s an inspiring introduction to their work.
Kajastus delivers one of the album’s dreamiest moments, gently lifting you among the stars before flowing seamlessly into the aptly titled A Moment In The Stars—pure mellow goodness.
Khom Loy Sky quickly became one of this listener’s favourites. A laid-back funk groove sets everything in motion, while sunny guitar chords and the chorus line “feels like magic” capture exactly how the song feels.
Throughout the album, you can occasionally hear that English isn’t Antti A’s first language. Rather than distracting, it brings authenticity and the unmistakable Nordic character. Then comes the Finnish-language Kuunnellaan, a welcome reminder that you’ve travelled to the soulful side of Scandinavia.
As each track arrives and fades, it’s clear Kai Kuu excels at crafting immersive soundscapes. Even more rhythmic moments, such as Rainbow’s End, retain that spacious atmosphere. Meanwhile, the shimmering guitar work on A Jealous Morning weaves through the arrangement with remarkable clarity, inviting reflection as much as movement.
It’s difficult to fault Songs From The Sun. A five-star release that reflects Kai Kuu’s artistic ambition, it’s one of the year’s most rewarding discoveries.
Enjoy the trip… and don’t forget to send them, and us, a postcard!
