Launching the new year in a new style is the Prince of Scandinavian Soul, Bernhoft, whose musical style has developed and should we say, matured, over the past few months. Always regarded as a highly skilful and entertaining performer, the Grammy-nominated singers’ new single – Visceral is an electronic /organic composition combining elements of soul, R&B and pop.
Visceral: adjective relating to deep inward feelings rather than to the intellect.
If this means the single should also appeal to the soul, well it certainly does.
The singles’ eerie opening softens with the Norwegian singers’ soulful vocals and superb lyrical prowess. The stutter vocals are a clever touch and the production, by fellow Norwegians Eivind Helgerød and Nicolay Tangen-Svennæs, provides a good bassline with sensitive tonal highs.
Lyrically the single clearly questions today’s society as he sings;
I know its ba, ba, ba ba basic
but somehow still some people haven’t na, na, na, nailed it
that we are individuals with individual taste
It doesn’t matter what colour or ra, ra, ra ra, race you are
or where you’re from
Music should be a reflection of today, and Bernhoft continues to show he’s tightly connected and even ahead.
Visceral is taken from the forthcoming EP – The Morning Comes – due January 20 2017.
Visceral is available for free download when you pre-order the EP on iTunes.
