Sometimes, we feel we have to do positive things in our lives for good things to come our way. We don’t know what we’ve done to deserve an EP from Fatima, but we must have been exemplary. In her latest EP, ‘Love on Acid‘, the soul enchantress once again proves she is a master at creating contemporary R&B and soul.
London-based Swedish artist/DJ Fatima, with her distinctive voice, charismatic presence and inspirational fashion style, consistently delivers sonic experiences that transcend the ordinary.
‘Love on Acid EP‘ is no exception.
Drawing on her rich musical history, including past collaborations with Floating Points and Eglo Records, Fatima creates music that pushes R&B boundaries.
The EP opens with the sparkling track Donut Waffles Sweet Grief. The beat here is deep and delicious, and she pours her honey-dripped vocals all over. The unnamed male vocalist (I’m sure it’s Harvey Whyte) is the unexpected strawberry topping.
‘Love On Acid,’ my personal favourite among the tracks, beautifully exemplifies Fatima’s signature vocals, effortlessly gliding her sultry tones that feel as smooth as oil on the skin. This four-minute journey is utterly captivating, from the opening to the final notes. What sets Fatima apart is the masterful fusion of R&B modernity with lush atmospheric sonics, and credit goes to rapper/pianist Harvey Whyte for his production. He underscores the EP in a unique sonic texture. Love on Acid‘s fresh and contemporary feel is skillfully achieved through the interplay of intricate percussion and looped piano beats, marrying soul with cutting-edge production techniques.
The cutting-edge production techniques are even clearer on the haunting single – ‘New Phase’, where the stuttering beat and moody tones surround you.
‘Drifting On Light,’ the EP’s closing track, delivers a slow-burning arrangement that allows her vocals to take centre stage, creating an intimate connection with the listener.
In ‘Love on Acid,’ Fatima has once again proven herself as a torchbearer for the Scandinavian soul scene. She sits apart in the worldwide R&B genre, often crowded with sex-obsessed stereotypes. While I may not remember any of the EP’s lyrics specifically, I’ll never forget the feeling. This EP is endlessly replayable and sets the right mood for any evening.
So, here’s to the good things that come our way when we least expect them – in the form of Fatima’s ‘Love on Acid,’ – an EP to remind us of what wonders happen when pure talent and soul music combine.
