In her new four-track EP ‘Try Again Tomorrow‘, Jean Root takes us on an emotional and delicate journey. I was introduced to this Swedish artist earlier this year, and since then, I have been hooked. Both her singles released this year have been fantastic, and I’ve waited in anticipation for her EP to drop.
“Try Again Tomorrow” features the two singles we’ve previously highlighted and two new ones. However, what is impressive is listening back to tracks ‘Thinking’ and ‘Hold Me Close’; I am reminded of why I loved them both, simultaneously discovering new and captivating details and aspects in them.
Furthermore, listening to the other songs, I discovered two new gems. Both represent the more laid-back side of the EP with gorgeous vocals, beautiful melodies and mature arrangements. However, the chilled nature by no means makes them uninteresting. Quite the opposite, both are full of depth and contemplation. ‘Fall Through‘ covers you in smoothness, and a slight, tasteful crescendo manages to tell a story and convey emotion without ever being overly explosive.
‘Try again tomorrow’ is arguably the strongest track of the EP. It is just gorgeous. Its gracefully beautiful harmonies and dynamics seem to be passing right through the headphones, only to take up residence in the listener’s head – and heart.
While each song has its traits that make them different from the others on the EP, they are also beautifully cohesive and seem to link to one another. There is a refreshing honesty and vulnerability to all the tracks that show proof of great maturity, as Jean Root is processing grief in different forms through this collection. The warmth and richness in their sound are another tone-setting quality for all four songs, and although the lyrics are sad, the EP creates a welcoming soundscape.
Jean Root has many qualities, and her skilfully crafted work is impressive. In the future, we look forward to hearing her define her trademark through her debut EP reveals an artist on the verge of stardom.
