In a dedicated homage to those who hold onto their youth, shatter stereotypes, and defy past conventions, Izza Gara’s EP YOUNG emerges as a spirited declaration of an unwavering youthful spirit. It’s an anthem that resonates throughout the album, characterised by lively, rapid rhythms intertwined with soothing grooves, all enveloped in an aura of non-conformity.
This EP encapsulates Izza Gara’s rebellion against societal expectations dictating how we should lead our lives, dress, and behave, forsaking conformity and challenging the ‘good girl’ persona that once confined her to passiveness and submission in the face of authority and masculinity. In this rebirth, she emerges as an expressive artist, unafraid to defy the norm.
The EP kicks off with Ten Feet Apart, an energetic track where Izza delves into the sensation of being misunderstood, a poignant tribute to a departed friend. The stuttering bassline of You’ve Done keeps the fire alive, while Neighborhood Knows carries the carefree vibes of a late-night street cruise with friends, perfectly suited for long motorway drives.
My personal favourite, Water, is a languid drum and bass composition that I’d eagerly pour into my speakers at any given moment. The inspiration behind this track, a secondhand fur coat that couldn’t be returned, underscores creative Izza’s lyrical visionary.
The Scandi soul diva Venus Anon joins forces with Izza Gara on the funky Came to Dance. This nightclub banger oozes with punchiness, sensuality, and energy, tailor-made for a pulsating dancefloor.
The EP gracefully concludes with Mama Wise Words, inviting us into a heartfelt conversation between Izza and her mother. Here, her mother imparts invaluable advice on personal boundaries. It’s an uplifting composition that cleverly plays with the idea of Izza adopting jellyfish resilience, leaving a sweeter aftertaste than a honey-drenched candy stick.
What sets this EP apart is its personality. It’s more than just a collection of songs; it’s a reflection of Izza Gara’s vibrant spirit. It’s a testament to breaking free from the mould and embracing the essence of youth and individuality.
The Review
YOUNG - Izza Gara
I'd suggest starting with the track Water, then let the rest of the EP pour over you. You have to be young at heart to get it.
