One of the most under-appreciated elements of music is the artist or bands’ chosen arrangement to convey their lyrical message. Amy Winehouses’ songs are a perfect example. Re-listen to – In My Bed, produced by Salaam Remi, and you’d realise that the hook on the b-line is as powerful as her voice. In fact, when the composition and message unite, you shouldn’t notice – it just fits and simply sounds exquisite.
Everything about the debut four-track EP Come Night, Come Day by Venus fits to perfection.
Venus pays attention to the details. Venus designed her EP to flow from moodier songs and progress into a more light-hearted sound. It’s an effective mesmeric flow. Even if you choose to listen to tracks in isolation, each has an impactful design and sonic modernity to stand alone.
Alongside Venus, additional production credits have to be given to Paul Adamah and Alma Bergman Byström. The EP mixes an addictive cocktail of R&B, hip-hop and soul with electronic loops, menacing beats, and mysterious edginess.
Straight out the block, Venus impresses. Opening with Amends Freestyle, this track has two exquisite layers – her angelic harmonies on one and a voluptuous upbeat bass synth on the other.
The alt-R&B duet I HATE U follows featuring Damien Martial‘s excellent warm soul vocals it’s expressed without cliches. Their twisted love affair weaves hypnotically in a tripped out manner. It’s seriously tasty stuff.
I’ve been playing this so loud even my neighbours must know the words.
Everything about this broken beat single – Still Get By thrills… every time. Every spin. The song is about self-preservation Venus explores experiencing queer love for the first time, so fittingly, the groove, melody, and shouts of ‘shit’ defy convention. I’ve been playing this so loud even my neighbours must know the words.
Kisses/Butterflies – A song about driving away in the night, kissing loved one’s goodbye (temporarily), Venus underscores her tender vocals with a rhythmical marching beat. See the video above for the visuals of this outstanding track.
The EP rounds of with the smooth and compelling EP title track Come Night, Come Day featuring Havsa. Playfully using vocal effects this rounds out the EP in style.
A stunning debut, Venus is Swedens R&B future – right here, right now.

This EP is a stunning introduction to a thrilling new artist. It's one of the easiest 5 out of 5 I've given. This Venus is a star.
