There’s no misspelling of the band’s name.
And there’s no misunderstanding the correlation between their name and their harmonious sound.
Following their exceptional debut single – Time, the Swedish band KAALM have just released their debut EP – Everything which follows their alluring introduction.
The 5-track EP is filled with smooth, soulful and jazzy expressions. Karolina Almgren, composes all the music by the Malmö-based group and her tender and soulful vocals are the glittering bonds to this EP.
From the opening song – Everything, Karolina’s attractive vocal style effortlessly conveys sensitive, engaging emotions. The arrangements, tinged with folk and jazz, are tuneful, and everything feels in place.
From an almost church organ opening – Need You to Stay immediately drew my attention with its catchy lyrics and tight guitar chords, which builds to an intense climactic high. Stunning!
Nothing Changes – demonstrates Karolina’s jazzy vocal style, cleverly and creatively composed with John Venkiahs’ delicate keys and drums by Filip Bensefelt.
Influenced by rock, soul, and jazz, set the car to overdrive with the summery, pacy track – Runnin’.
The guitar riff by Joakim Svensson uplifts this song into ‘classic’ territory. The production is tight, and Karolinas’ faultless tones almost take a backseat as this song shines as a real EP gem.
If I had to define Scandinavian soul, I could hold this track up as a perfect example.
The EP rounds off with – Varje Gång. The Swedish sung song doesn’t feel out of place with balanced melodies and a gentle guitar.
The only reservation I have is regarding the cover art. To me, it simply doesn’t reflect the delicate and sophisticated sound contained within.
And the contents are seriously worth your attention.
Karolina’s vocals should sit just at the front, and pay attention to the sound of her vocals at the end of the notes. They should gently caress your ears.
