Written by Nana Rashid/Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen and performed by Nana Rashid, Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen, Lasse Jacobsen, Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen – Mother, Father – the new release from Nana Rashid enters our soulful radar with a contemporary and engagingly looped, jazzy composition.
Nana Rashid’s midnight vocals convey the song’s rhymical, hypnotic magnetism, highlighted with lyrics such as ‘tell me all about these winding roads I need to walk‘. And just like the midnight hour, Nana’s vocal has engrossing depth and intriguing sensations. Those who appreciated the dark jazzy atmosphere of US artist Lady Blackbird are served an ideal comparison.
Giving us an insight into this track’s engrossing lyrics, Nana Rashid explained;
The song [Mother, Father] is about being between my mum’s (Danish) and my dad’s culture (Zanzibari/Omani). It’s about belonging to non of these two places and yet belonging everywhere and how confusing it can be to create a solid ground to stand on in between. The song is a lot of questions. Questions that I have asked people around me and figured out I am the only one to answer. Though the issues might be inherited – I am the only one to solve them.
We’ve admired this Danish artist for some time since her debut EP, Sorrow in Sunlight (2016), and though the releases have been sporadic, she’s continued to perform live, spending time culturing her craft.
The single is released with a video (see above), which though simple, is beautifully illustrated, warming yet chilled. Mother, Father is deep in content and warm in heart. Certified as music for listeners.
