If a band classes themselves as pop, it doesn’t mean their music doesn’t cross my listening superhighway of soul. Especially when searching the abundance of musical creativity across the Nordic cities.
One such band who appeared and stayed on my playlist is No. 4.
The female pop trio is based in Oslo and consists of Emilie Christensen /vocal, Ingeborg Marie Mohn / Keyboards, guitar, vocals and Julia Witek / Bass, vocals. Since 2014 they’ve released two albums, ‘Henda I været‘ and ‘Hva nå‘, and established a strong following with their Norwegian sung indie songs.
So often artists /bands release a soulful debut before heading into a pop direction as attention increases. What makes No. 4 unique to me is their music which has evolved from pop to soul. And I don’t think it’s intentional. However, if it is, then I raise my hat a little higher to them.
With a third album ‘Duel’ due to land this September, a listen to two pre-released singles find they closer embrace the warm essence of soul from Scandinavia.
If you enjoy bands like Boom Clap Bachelors, Quintessence and 4hero, then you’ll enjoy this duo of elegant and soulful singles. The production is more vibrant than their previous work – deeper and fuller in arrangements. I’d class these as their best work to date.
I suggest starting with the dreamy – Hva Kjærlighet Er
And follow with the poppy yet soulfully angelic – Alt Fiel.
I’m sure Swedes especially will warm to No. 4 and experience a closer appreciation for the lyrical subjects and stories. Listening to non-English songs isn’t for everyone; however, I’d encourage you to embrace the unknown and admire the vocal melodies and pleasuring atmosphere this band creates.
The band’s third album, ‘Duel‘ is out on September 20 on vinyl. Add this to this months playlist.
