When seeking inspiration for music that warms the soul, tingles the feet and inspires the wardrobe – the vibrant 70′ and 80’s naturally comes to mind. Dipping into those musical archives provides the ideal vibes for – Band of Pockets and their debut EP Trust this Feeling.
A collaboration between concept creator, Swedish songwriter J.O.Nilson, and American soul-singer Yona Marie the four-track EP encases disco, R&B, and neo-soul vibrations.
Boogie Disco opens the EP with a funky bass lick, glittery percussion and hooky chorus. The lights on the production levels flutter with Beverly Girl or Cool Million party-starting energies. If dancing your cares away has a playlist, I’d recommend adding this floor-friendly number to the list.
Also living up to its title is – Feel Like Home. Yona Maries’ vocal soar with harmonic balance, and perhaps her musical roots shine the strongest here as it’s clear she ‘feels at home’. Vocally assured, this groovy, gospel layered single with well-written lyrics of love would be welcomed by any church choir to uplift a dispirited congregation.
An exquisite production also underlines Trust This Feeling, where the soft keys, sweet horns and life-empowering lyrics attract like magnetised rays of sunshine. The electric guitar provides a sizzling outro.
Only Sweetest Thing stumbles in interlocking into a sumptuous whole, and that’s simply in comparison with the three preceding tracks. (psst .. I’m convinced the opening 7secs could be sampled in a new ‘Rare Groove’ track.)
Trust this Feeling by Band of Pockets is their first dance steps, and it captures a quartet of good-feeling vibes. I’d happily ask them for another dance! BTW, cool cover artwork too!
