80’s R&B is brought back to life with Scarlet Pleasure’s debut EP Mirage. The Danish trio, lead by the superb soulful vocals of Emil Goll deliver a sound that’s retro, smooth and undeniably sexy.
It’s hard not to literally smile while listening to the opening bars of the track ‘Smile’. I’m immediately sent back to the days of VHS, Walkmans, and shoulder pads.
The new 7-track EP includes the hit song Windy and it sits between the excellent tracks Caramel and Under the Palm Trees.
The whole EP is balanced between pop and R&B with synthesized keyboards, and it’s without doubt Emil who gives the whole band the needed edge to stand out with his MJ like vocals. Mirage is the perfect example (well every track is) as his vocals will bring to life any quality Hi-fi.
Scarlet Pleasure can currently be regularly heard on mainstream Danish radio, and many other international stations must surely follow suit.
The Review
This EP is indeed a trip down memory lane for me, but also an excellent revival of a retro sound delightfully reproduced for a new generation. A pleasurable trip 'Back to the Future'!
