A website dedicated to the discovery of soulful sounds is naturally going to present a spectrum of music which are not so easily labelled. It means we uncover music often outside mainstream radio and not ‘typical’.
An example is Swedish singer/songwriter Diza Guava. Her unique artist name a precursor to the individualism she seeks and represents.
The Swedish artist debuts her four-track, Swedish sung EP Diza Guava and a preview reached me over a week ago. I confess to playing it every day since its arrival.
Diza Guava’s EP entwines pop and R&B influences with playfulness, charm and vulnerability on a canvas of electronic beats.
Understanding the Swedish language, outside of my mother tongue English, opens my ears to comprehend the dialogue. Yet despite this, when Diza punctuates with English, as on the excellent ‘Bara vara nära‘, it resonates with a pleasing sweetness.
/and now you broke my heart, baby /
Se dig Online is a danceable joint opening with the electronic chorus delightfully underlined with a sweet bass and catchy lyrics urging you to accompany her in song. And oh, that bass line! This outro deserved an extra hour!
Diza’s sensual R&B tone radiates even when altered with electronic vocal effects as on Atmosfär. The song’s theme is a moving break-up story, with an occasional sound of a water droplet appearing perhaps symbolising a teardrop. It’s the subtle details in her music that encourage repeated plays. The slightly darker Osagt (Unsaid) enthrals with revealing lyrics, and occasion F-bomb and a huggable beat.
Throughout, whether the beats are rhythmic or mellow the melodic instrument of Diza’s vocals maintains their soothing and engaging quality.
Unpretentious and honest, Diza has collected four repeatedly enjoyable tracks. As a CV it tells you everything about her.
Diza Guava EP is the resumé you’ll want to call back.
