This may be the only time in the past 20 years that I’ve been glad to not buy as much vinyl as I used to. Had I’d been searching through my local record store, I probably would have skipped past Marie Dahlstrom’s EP – entitled Gloom – no matter how good she looked on the cover! What a mistake I would have made! Luckily, Marie’s ever-growing fan base means that there’s no doubt I would have been recommended this EP sooner or later.
Gloom is Marie’s third EP and contains 11 songs from this Danish singer’s constant stream of solid soulful tracks. She really is one of the hardest working Scandinavian soul singers.
But is Gloom… gloomy?
As you would expect, the EP contains tracks collected from Marie’s personal journeys through life, and a couple of the tracks may come across as a little downbeat. Her vocals, however, never make them feel like a drag.
‘My Everything’ (released as a single) is a powerfully emotive open letter and proves that, as a lyricist, Marie is continuing to push to new heights – simply brilliant and truly heartfelt.
‘Reunion feat. Kimba’, is my personal favourite, and ‘Interlude – Reunion’ is exactly what sensitive speakers were made for. The production on this album is simply top-notch.
If you’re looking for something even more upbeat, the excellent single ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ is also included.
Marie’s EP Gloom isn’t gloomy, but it’s super-smooth, mellow soul for sure!
