I remember writing a large note of the name ‘Hannes’ when I first heard the upcoming Swedish singer voice floating from my speakers. Hannes launched his solo project In November 2016 and presented his unique expressions of a mix of pop, soul, jazz and R&B. His tone delicate harmonies, silk-like and soulful. Working with producer/songwriter Tom White, Hannes debuted with the single ’I Went to The Jungle‘ and made an immediate impression.
In the tail-end of last year (2018) the singer released a new track on Soundcloud and his two previous songs (one resides on Spotify) he has already drawn numerous plaudits who include UK DJ Rich Chocolate and Swedish Soul/Funk pioneer Dim Out. The latter contacted me directly to see if I’d heard of him.
Hannes has quickly become one of the hottest artists to emerge in 2017/18. Here are three reasons you too should take note of the upcoming singer.
1. He’s been to the Jungle.
Not literally.
Well, as far as I know…
His debut single titled – I Went to The Jungle certainly wasn’t taken from a Tarzan soundtrack. We described it as ‘an exquisite balance of groove and melodies’ and the single is soaked in an alluring soulful sound. Hannes’s vocals float on this gem and immediately signalled we were listening to someone special.
2. He can sing a balled of sweet tear-jerking soul quality.
Another demonstration of Hannes’s vocal range can be heard on his second release, the sublime and haunting – Better Days (feat. Tom White). Hannes effortlessly scales the high-pitched heights accompanied by majestic violins on this impressive follow-up.
3. A genuine contender to commercial soul/pop crowns.
His latest single – My Shine Is a Fade, released on Soundcloud in November 2018. The gentle opening of piano keys, accompanied by Hannes’s delicate expression evokes gospel sentiment. The bass interjects intermittently and the production is underplayed. This may or may not be a demo, either way; it’s an intense listen regardless.
The singer bumps a firm shoulder against his contemporaries (such as Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran) as he steps forward to the mic, and international ears would be wise to take note.
We all should.
