There are times when a track arrives and suddenly I find myself leaning back in my chair. My pulse settles into rhythm and I gaze out the window at the horizon. Well… to the building opposite. That’s what Bygone, the latest release from Swedish duo Yesterday’s Princess, brings to the table. A gentle chill pill and an iced glass of water.
A short sample length single, it offers something a little unexpected on Scandinavian Soul, an instrumental, laid-back, jazz-funk-infused trip that feels both nostalgic and modern.
Formed by Swedish duo Fredrik Bergsten and Marcus Larsson, this duo set out to explore the sonic spaces they could create together, led by tone, texture, and what I can only describe as loop perfection. Bygone shimmers. It’s a sparkling, jazzy groove with a relaxed ambiance. The keys sparkle. The mellow mood is 70’s velvet. It feels familiar, in the best way.
But with we couldn’t stop there.
There are previous releases to escape into too. And DJs, this is for you too. With the right permission, these beats could blend seamlessly into something new. But on their own? They’re mini worlds you can sink into.
Not Today (Maybe Tomorrow)
This is your lying-in-the-grass tune. A cloud-gazing anthem with sleepy rhythms and a gentle sway that makes you want to put your phone down and just be. There’s a softness here that’s hard to describe, but you’ll know it when you feel it.
Anemoia (4:41)
The longest track of the three and the one that sealed the deal. Echoing keys, a gorgeous bassline, and guitar chords that wander in and out like old friends. It’s soothing and completely captivating.
I felt something quietly retro here. A distant echo of 90s jazz-funk vibes. Something you half-remember from late-night lounge compilations or background soundtracks in Londons’ cool bars. But this isn’t just a trip down memory lane. It’s a nod to the craft of calming atmospheres, modernised and reimagined.
If you’re new to instrumental soul or melancholic flavours, this is a gentle doorway in. And if you’re already deep in the scene? This one might just bring back some feelings you forgot you missed.
Three tracks. Three moods. And a quiet promise of more to come.
Let’s keep drifting back, shall we?
