When it comes to Scandinavian soul pioneers, the list isn’t complete —cannot be complete — without D’Sound.
Since their debut in 1996 with the hit single Real Name, this Norwegian outfit have quietly, consistently, and classily built a catalogue of some of the most enduring grooves to come out of the North. And now, nearly three decades in, they’ve delivered one of their finest.
Their latest single Golden is exactly that. Neo Soul at its absolute finest, spun with a shimmering thread of Acid Jazz, this track doesn’t so much play as it glides into your ears, bringing with it a wave of nostalgia and a firm nod to the now. Warm, bass-led, beautifully arranged, and downright addictive — it’s everything D’Sound fans live for.
Formed by drummer Kim Ofstad and bassist Jonny Sjo, D’Sound have aged like the best kind of wine: deeper, richer, and more refined with time. Golden isn’t just a return to form, it’s a celebration of their evolution. The groove, the tempo, the class… this is what happens when seasoned musicians know exactly who they are and what they do best.
Even with changes over the years—including the departure (and glorious return) of original lead singer Simone Eriksrud — D’Sound have kept their core strong. Simone’s comeback in 2022/23 added another spark, and the band’s recent run of singles and summer concerts showed a group not content to sit in nostalgia, but actively shaping it for a modern audience.
Golden is a smooth slice of soul that feels like a perfectly lit lounge bar velvet sofas, the hum of conversation making any place feel ‘cool and hip’. This is grown-up soul, stylish and effortless.
