In many ways, Winnie Raeder is already a ‘dream come true’ story. The Danish singer/songwriter was discovered working in a café in Putney, London, and invited to step in front of the microphone. What they unearthed is a singer whose powerful vocals and style are far too good to remain hidden.
The blues echoes in Winnie’s voice. Passionate, not sullen, thoughtful and exceptionally emotionally-rich. Her tone, soulful to the core, draws parallels with Swedish singer Seinabo Sey and Adele.
The singers’ debut four-track EP From Here is devoid of electronic effects and creative studio techniques prevalent in modern pop and urban contemporary music. These ‘unplugged’ recordings focus on her vocal power and reveal a singer, honest and natural in style and thoroughly absorbing in content.
The EP delves into the trauma of past relationships (I Wear A Ghost), seeking inner strength (Don’t you Dare), and emotional comfort and love (Still, Are You Waiting?). When Winnie sings, you feel it.
The gospelesque vocals Winnie expresses throughout are atmospheric, intense and expansive. And much like a live Church performance, Winnie’s voice surrounds you, reverberating engagingly, fully enveloping you and your listing space. Through both speakers and headphones, her sound delivers the same enthralling experience.
The Review
This EP is not for the background. This is for the listener.
