Producer Marcus White and the artist Hannes describes their new song ‘Stockholmsvy‘ ft waterbaby as being “kind of a mix between prairie country, contrabass, funk piano and R&B.” When we first heard this description, we were partly intrigued, but also somewhat confused. However, when listening to the track, an impressive-feeling is added to an intrigued one, and the feeling of confusion is replaced with a sense of understanding.
As it turns out, the description of the song is very much accurate, and the track really seems to be taking the best out of each genre and creating a brand new sound while keeping the spirit of each music style it draws from. It has the smooth and skilful vocals from a well-composed R&B song, the groovy retro vibe from the funk, and the contemplating lyrics of a country tune.
This velvety single ranks amongst Hannes’s and this year’s best releases.
While both the track and music video feel instinctive, it remains highly relatable and likeable, it is clear it’s very much a conscious decision and all underpinned by the excellent production, composed with deft skill.
The voices of Hannes and the sublime waterbaby seem to match each other perfectly. The instrumental section is unique and distinguished with a lot of detail. The lyrics in particular are well formulated, encouraging you to listen from beginning to end just like the video as it follows both artists taking a spontaneous and improvised Stockholm underground train.
This velvety single ranks amongst Hannes‘s and this year’s best releases.
