Sofia Aarvik is an artist we’ve written about and praised many times. We are therefore always delighted when she releases new music. Her latest single ‘Without You’, written by Simen Kjølberg, Merethe Johnsen Mjønes and Rie Aagaard, does not disappoint.
Sofia herself says that she has developed both her vocal style and overall sound in ‘Without You‘. This is the first thing we noticed while listening to it as well. Sofia Aarvik has always been the queen of delicate, honest vocals and soft, warm arrangements, but she takes this skill to new heights in her latest single. Aside from the crescendo at the end, the arrangement is more stripped down than ever and beautifully moves towards almost a capella at times. Sofia’s voice is so airy and delicate that we could listen to it for hours. At certain parts of the song, she presents the most impressive vocals we’ve heard from her!
The lightness of the arrangement paves the way for the track’s emotion to truly be heard. At the same time, the lightness of the sound in contrast to the deep emotion of sorrow conveyed in the song creates a compelling contrast. This contrast may reflect a breakup you are truly grieving but at the same time make your peace with. Regardless of how it is interpreted, Sofia Aarvik and her producer have created a powerfully relatable track.
‘Without You’ is the first single from Sofia Aarvik’s upcoming EP ‘Ghosts’, released later this spring. She describes it as “a reflection on whether or not we let ourselves be seen and deeply known”. We can definitely hear this overriding theme in ‘Without You’, and if this single is representative of the EP, we cannot wait to hear more.
