Almost exactly a year ago, we wrote about Yoël and Majabou’s song ‘Stick Around‘, commending the flawless production, warm vocals and vibrancy. Now, this dynamic duo is back with another groovy collaboration – Demoner (Swedish for Demons). Their last song stayed with us and became a Summer Essential, and we are convinced that this one will be too.
As we mentioned before, Majabou mixes different genres in the studio, creating her own unique expression. We hear this in every tone of Demoner. Not only is the song an exquisite melting pot of R’n’B, jazz, soul and reggae, it also comes in two versions – one soul oriented one with Yoël and one in sweet reggae vibes. To all you reggae lovers out there, we strongly recommend listening!
The song’s catchy chorus is one of the aspects that stands out to us the most – you only need to hear it once and then it’s stuck in your mind for at least the next weeks. However, the song also has well thought out and thought provoking lyrics. On the one hand it can be understood as describing a toxic relationship, where past trauma and mixed messages create destructiveness. If you prefer a less dark interpretation, it can also be understood as a description of the difficulties of coming together in a relationship. This is when different experiences, different baggage and commitment issues make openness and attachment complicated. The groovy tunes and effortless vocals seem to give the whole song a twinkle in the eye, possibly supporting such an interpretation.
With that being said, no matter what you look for in a song, we can guarantee you will find it in this one!
And for all us reggae lovers!
