Regular readers will know how much we celebrate uniqueness and artistry, and for us, Swedish artist Rebecca Sjöberg embodies both beautifully.
Rebecca Sjöberg, a songwriter, producer, and singer from Stockholm, first captured our attention in 2022 with her superb single, Blir Jag Hund. Her latest Swedish-sung release, Ja, ja, ja, ja, embraces the senses, transcending language barriers with its emotive resonance.
Written by Rebecca, the song speaks to the universal longing to stay close to one’s roots. “It is about not wanting to leave home,” she confirms. Those fortunate enough to have had a wonderful upbringing will relate to the feeling of detachment that leaving home brings. It’s a rare theme in music, and we commend her for addressing it with such sincerity.
As the tune opens, Rebecca’s remarkable vibrato shines, showcasing her unique vocal style. A wonderfully slowed rhythm flows underneath, creating a backdrop that highlights the melancholy and ache in her voice as she pleads to stay. The saxophone notes are exquisite, adding to the song’s depth and emotional texture.
The song’s abrupt ending surprised us, but it’s a deliberate artistic choice, as Rebecca clarified. “And yes!!! That’s kind of the point. Ending with lyrics ‘och allt du sa var’ [‘and everything you said was’] – and then filling in the last words for yourself – ‘ja ja, ja ja’ [‘yeah yeah, yeah yeah’].”
Indeed, she’s right. Short and sweet, and all we can say is ‘yeah yeah, yeah yeah’ for more!
