D/troit come bearing gifts / Motown X-mas song
The retro-soul Danish band serves a modern take on the Christmas classic.
The first few seconds of D/troit’s new Christmas song could be the start of any Christmas classic with those glistening triangle tones in a descending scale. Very quickly, however, a soulful and distinct bass line kicks in, and true Christmas song fanatics like us become over the moon getting a new, and a quite different one to add to our playlist.
The rest of “Motown X-mas Song” follows through in the same mode: groovy yet relaxed and Christmas-y in every way. Although, it is not one of those with several Christmas sound effects or, for that matter, just another “All I Want For Christmas”-sound alike that you secretly are pretty happy to get rid of in January. This one is a unique Christmas feel-good tune and one that we wouldn’t mind feeling good about all year round. Simply put, it is the perfect mix of soul and Christmas, and D/troit manages to keep very much of their retro band sound – which we always love to hear.
The song’s chorus states that “there is love in every Christmas song”. Let D/troit and their message of love be a reminder of what matters this Christmas. This year more than ever, the world truly does need more love and unity, and Christmas might be the perfect time to start showing just that.
